"When visiting Zakynthos, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural faux pas. Here are some tips: Avoid showing disrespect towards the Greek Orthodox Church, which is an integral part of Greek culture. This includes dressing modestly when visiting churches or monasteries, and not taking photographs during services. Do not disrespect the Greek flag or national symbols, as Greeks are very patriotic and this could cause offense. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, the economic crisis, or disputes with neighboring countries. Greeks are passionate about their country's issues and these discussions can quickly become heated. Do not rush or push in lines. Greeks value politeness and patience, and pushing or rushing is considered rude. Avoid being too loud or boisterous in public places. Greeks value their peace and quiet, especially during siesta hours (from 2pm to 5pm), when many people take a break from their day to rest. Do not leave a tip on the table at restaurants. In Greece, it's customary to give the tip directly to the waiter. Avoid making the 'moutza' gesture, which involves extending all fingers and presenting the palm towards someone. This is considered a serious insult in Greece. Remember to say 'Yamas' (Cheers) before drinking, it's a common practice in Greece and not doing so might be considered impolite. Lastly, Greeks are known for their hospitality, so refusing an offer of food or drink can be seen as impolite. It's better to accept, even if you're not hungry or thirsty," remarked another expat who made the move to Zakynthos, Greece.
