What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Sihanoukville. They wrote...
"Expats in Sihanoukville often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. The majority of locals speak Khmer, and while some may have a basic understanding of English, communication can still be difficult. Another challenge is the difference in lifestyle and pace. Cambodians generally have a more relaxed and slower pace of life, which can be frustrating for expats who are used to a faster, more structured lifestyle. The local cuisine can also be a challenge for some expats. While Cambodian food is rich and diverse, it can be quite different from Western food, and some may find it hard to adjust to the local diet. Understanding and navigating the local customs and etiquette can also be challenging. Cambodian culture places a high value on respect and politeness, and there are many social norms and expectations that expats may not be aware of. Lastly, the lack of certain amenities and services that expats may be used to in their home countries can also be a challenge. This includes things like reliable internet, western-style healthcare, and certain types of food or products," wrote a member who made the move to Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
