What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Akureyri. They wrote...
"Expats in Akureyri often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Icelandic is a complex language with unique phonetics and grammar rules, making it difficult for foreigners to learn and understand. Another challenge is the weather. The harsh, cold climate, especially during the winter months, can be a significant adjustment for those not used to such conditions. The isolation can also be a challenge. Akureyri, while being the second largest city in Iceland, is still relatively small and remote, which can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. The local food can also be a challenge for some expats. Traditional Icelandic cuisine includes dishes like fermented shark and sheep's head, which may not be to everyone's taste. Lastly, the cost of living in Iceland is high, which can be a shock for expats. Everything from groceries to housing tends to be more expensive than in many other countries," explained one expat living in Akureyri, Iceland.
