What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Aveiro. They wrote...
"Expats in Aveiro, may find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English, and it is essential to learn Portuguese to fully integrate into the community. Additionally, they might struggle with the slower pace of life, as locals tend to value a relaxed lifestyle and may not be as time-conscious as expats from other countries. The bureaucracy in Portugal can also be frustrating for expats, as dealing with paperwork and administrative tasks can be time-consuming and complicated. Furthermore, some expats may find it difficult to adapt to the traditional gender roles and family values that are still prevalent in Portuguese society. Lastly, building a social network can be challenging, as Portuguese people are known to be warm and friendly but may take time to form close friendships with newcomers," remarked another expat in Aveiro, Portugal.
