What is it like to retire in Tortola?
We asked retirees what it is like retiring in Tortola. They said...
"Life for a retiree in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, is often described as a tropical paradise. The island offers a relaxed pace of life, with warm weather year-round, beautiful beaches, and stunning natural beauty. There is a small but active expat community, primarily made up of retirees from the US, Canada, and the UK. This community often organizes social events and activities, providing a sense of camaraderie and support for those living away from their home countries. Cultural attractions on the island include historical sites such as the Old Government House Museum and the Callwood Rum Distillery, which has been in operation for over 400 years. The island's rich history is also reflected in its music, food, and festivals, providing plenty of opportunities for retirees to immerse themselves in local culture. Recreational activities are abundant, with options for both land and sea adventures. Hiking, bird watching, and exploring the island's national parks are popular land-based activities. The surrounding waters offer excellent conditions for sailing, snorkeling, and diving, with many retirees taking up these activities to stay active and enjoy the island's marine life. Nightlife in Tortola is relatively low-key, reflecting the island's laid-back lifestyle. There are a number of bars and restaurants offering live music, particularly reggae and calypso, and the occasional beach party. However, the island is not known for its late-night clubs or party scene, making it a peaceful and serene place for retirees to enjoy their golden years," explained one expat living in Tortola, the British Virgin Islands.
