What are healthcare services like in Port Antonio?
We asked retirees if they have access to good medical care in Port Antonio. They wrote...
"Healthcare services in Port Antonio are provided by a mix of public and private facilities. The public healthcare system is managed by the Ministry of Health and includes the Port Antonio Hospital, which offers a range of services including emergency care, maternity services, and general medical care. There are also several health centers scattered throughout the city that provide basic healthcare services. Private healthcare is also available, with a number of private doctors and clinics operating in the city. These facilities often offer a wider range of services and shorter wait times, but at a higher cost. Pharmacies are readily available for prescription and over-the-counter medications. However, it's recommended for visitors to bring a sufficient supply of any necessary medications, as not all medications may be readily available. While the healthcare services in Port Antonio are generally adequate for routine and emergency care, complex medical issues may require transfer to larger hospitals in Kingston or overseas. The quality of care can vary, and resources may be limited compared to more developed countries. Health insurance is highly recommended, as medical costs can be high, particularly for private healthcare. It's also important to note that ambulance services may be limited, and in case of serious illness or injury, air evacuation may be necessary," wrote a member who made the move to Port Antonio, Jamaica.
