Where should I setup a bank account in Kampong Thom?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Kampong Thom what banks they use and there advice about banking. They advised...

"Expats considering retirement in Kampong Thom, should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, the cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, making it an attractive option for those on a fixed income. However, healthcare facilities may not be up to Western standards, particularly in rural areas like Kampong Thom, so it's important to have a comprehensive health insurance plan. The official language is Khmer, and while English is spoken in tourist areas and by some younger people, it's less common in rural areas. Learning some basic Khmer phrases can be very helpful. The local culture is deeply rooted in Buddhism and respect for elders is paramount. It's important to respect local customs and traditions to integrate into the community. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. It can get very hot and humid, especially in the dry season, which may be uncomfortable for some people. The local cuisine is delicious and diverse, with rice and fish being staples. However, Western food can be harder to find in rural areas, so be prepared to adapt your diet. Safety can be a concern, particularly road safety, as traffic laws are not always adhered to. It's also important to be aware of the risk of landmines in rural areas, a legacy of the country's civil war. Finally, while Cambodia has a relatively low cost of living, it's important to have a solid financial plan in place. The country does not have a bilateral Social Security agreement with the U.S, so American retirees cannot receive Social Security benefits while living there," said a member in Kampong Thom, Cambodia.
