As a foreigner living in Oxford, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Oxford if they have access to public healthcare in Oxford. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Oxford, you will have access to public healthcare. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) provides healthcare for all UK residents, including foreigners who are legally residing in the country. However, depending on your visa status, you may be required to pay an immigration health surcharge as part of your visa application. The public healthcare system in the UK is comprehensive and generally of a high standard. It covers everything from routine check-ups and minor illnesses to emergency services and major surgeries. Most services are free at the point of use, although there may be charges for certain things like prescription medications and dental care. The NHS is funded through general taxation, and it operates on the principle that healthcare should be available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. However, it's worth noting that the system can be under significant pressure, which can sometimes lead to long waiting times for non-emergency treatments. In Oxford specifically, there are several NHS hospitals, including the John Radcliffe Hospital, which is the largest of the Oxford University Hospitals. There are also numerous GP surgeries throughout the city where you can register as a patient. In addition to the NHS, there is also a private healthcare sector in the UK. Some people choose to take out private health insurance to cover the cost of treatments in private hospitals, where waiting times can be shorter. However, this is not necessary to access healthcare in the UK, and many people rely solely on the NHS," said another in Oxford, England.
