Sosua, Dominican Republic

As a foreigner living in Sosua, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Sosua if they have access to public healthcare in Sosua. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Sosua, Dominican Republic, you will have access to public healthcare. However, it's important to note that the quality of public healthcare in the Dominican Republic can vary. In general, public hospitals and clinics are often crowded and the resources may be limited. The standard of care in public hospitals is not as high as in private facilities. Many doctors and medical staff in public hospitals may not speak English, which could be a barrier if you do not speak Spanish. In contrast, private healthcare in the Dominican Republic is of a higher standard. Many expatriates and wealthier Dominicans choose to use private healthcare. Private hospitals are generally well-equipped and the doctors are often trained abroad, providing a higher standard of care. It's also worth noting that while emergency care is provided to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, for non-emergency care, you may be asked to prove your ability to pay before treatment is given. Therefore, it is highly recommended for foreigners living in the Dominican Republic to have a comprehensive health insurance plan. Pharmacies are widely available and most medications can be purchased without a prescription. However, it's advisable to bring a supply of any prescribed medications you take regularly, as not all medications may be available. In terms of dental care, the standard is generally good and much cheaper than in North America or Europe. Many expatriates choose to have dental work done in the Dominican Republic due to the lower cost. Overall, while public healthcare is available in Sosua, it may be beneficial to consider private healthcare options or ensure you have good health insurance coverage," explained one expat living in Sosua, the Dominican Republic.
