travel to/from islands

We're considering a purchase on one of the outer islands. I understand there are periodic water taxis for travel to and from islands mostly for the resorts, but what if we have our own boat? Do most towns have a place to dock while we head into town for various necessities such as groceries? Here in the states slips (private boat docks) are available to rent by the month or year. Think of it as a private parking space. Is something like that available in Belize, specifically Dangriga or Hopkins?
