I am a Canadian citizen and I would like to move to Colombia for 6-12 months, possibly longer and before I contact an immigration service here in Ontario, I thought I would ask this group if anyone has experience with successfully doing this. A little about me. No criminal record, good job, traveler, taxes paid in full, good credit, etc. Not an undesirable or risky person in other words. I have a very good job I do not want to lose, working for a large international company with no offices anywhere in Colombia.
I want to legally work from Colombia, in my existing job that I would take with me. I have good seniority with the company and have been working from home the last 10 years. My employer is fine with me relocating to Colombia, but it must be done properly, i.e. proper authorization to work in Colombia. I'm not willing to risk my job to do this covertly, so hiding it from my employer is not an option I would consider.
If it matters, annual income is very solid. While not rich, I have some tax free savings and make enough to live like a king in Colombia. I have been to Bogota twice, Cali twice, Cartagena and Santa Marta and would likely move to Bogota or Medellin. I've got about 2 months experience in Colombia and I've also spent 16 months in various parts of Peru, so enough experience in South America to know what I am getting into.
I'm not looking for citizenship or to get married. I might consider permanent residence, but right now I am ideally looking at 6 months to a year, maybe more.
Have any of you done what I am hoping to do? Any suggestions are appreciated. I do intend on contacting an immigration service/lawyer, but first I am doing my research.
