expats life

My husband has an opportunity to work in Jamaica and we are seriously considering it. His position will be based in Kingston, St Andrew. I, however, have a few concerns as I heard that it is not a very safe place to live, especially for expats. Can someone please shed light on this issue for us? We have a young 3 year old son so we are particularly concern about safety. I will become a stay at home wife so our freedom to roam the places and somewhere to go to during the day that is safe and fun is really important. The last thing I want is to feel like a prisoner in my own home. What is expats lifestyle like over there? Is it multicultural? Is there a really good network there for socialising and get togethers? I know there are areas iin Jamiaca is probably a no-go areas but are there plenty of areas that are great also? Also we have 2 pet dogs which we will need to bring with us, I hear it is really difficult to do so. We are from Australia so our dogs are pretty healthy and fit.
Thanks!
