Buying Property in Malaysia

We are a group of people about to move to Malaysia and would like information on the property market in Sabah or east Coast areas. We are interested in having a property with solar energy (if possible) or an old style property with the high ceilings/courtyards. Do you have to pay property tax in Malaysiaa and/or Malaysian Borneo? We are not interested in living in Condos where a bunch of expats live, we wish to live more with the locals. Any information would be appreciated.
