Sarawak MM2H 2020

On 1 September 2o2o some new regulations and requirements were instituted to the Sarawak version of MM2H.

This program is still open (unlike Sabah and West Malaysia which are under suspension until at least January 2021). The difficulty, of course, is getting into Malaysia or Sarawak during the RMCO.

As a practical matter only those already in Sarawak can apply...although it is hoped that soon tourists on expired visas in West Malaysia may be able to visit.

S-MM2H is far more flexible in terms of financial requirements than the program on the Peninsula. There is no need to show ones complete liquid assets, for example. In can simply demonstrate that one has sufficient income/pension to live in Malaysia (RM7000/mo. -single or RM10,000/mo. couple) OR establish a Fixed Deposit in a local bank branch of RM150K/RM300K. The FD has double under the new rules. It was half as much before Sept 1.

Also should say that with a few exceptions S-MM2H is for those over 50. One cannot work in Malaysia under this visa.

A new benefit is that the term of the visa has increased to 10 years (from 5). One can renew after that if one demonstrates that one has spent 15 days a year IN Sarawak. Apparently one must do that every year...no gaps.

Other than that limited visitation requirement one can live on the Peninsula or travel abroad as much as one likes- or can- under Covid-19 restrictions.

One must now get a Letter of Good Behavior from home/residence country (only principal applicant)...and buy health insurance for self/dependents. They will now allow parents or unmarried children up to 21 under the principals visa.

Under 50 - there are some additional requirements.

If you are 30-50 and have children enrolled in a Sarawak school you may apply for S-MM2H.

If you are 30-50 and have a prolonged medical issue under treatment by a Sarawak doctor you can obtain S-MM2H.

Of course under 50 applicants must meet the other requirements as well.

And lastly if one is over 40 and buys a residential property of RM600,000 (Kuching) or RM500,000 (outside Kuching) one may be eligible provided one meets the other requirements as well.

Sarawakian Agents registered with the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism are now allowed. Individual applicant require a sponsor. A new regulation limits a sponsor to one application/recipient.
