Spanish NIE

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to move to Spain later this year and I'm trying to understand the bureaucracy before arriving.

One thing that keeps coming up is the NIE number. From what I understand it's basically a tax identification number for foreigners and you need it for almost everything in Spain (opening a bank account, renting an apartment, etc.).

My questions are:

How hard is it to actually get an NIE?

Can you apply before arriving in Spain?

How long does it usually take?

If anyone has gone through the process recently I would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks to all!
