Transporting dog to Uruguay

Have any of you had any experience bringing a dog to Uruguay? I have good information about the vet and paperwork requirements but am looking at the best way to fly the dog. Our plan is to fly direct from Miami to Montevideo but do not know if it would be better to fly the dog as checked baggage or as cargo. He is an Australian Cattle Dog, about 55 pounds. What are your experiences / opinions.
