Parent's Review of Garden International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Garden International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Kuala Lumpur

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

British International

What grade levels are represented at this school?

EYC to Year 13

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Most children get to school by car or bus. We are lucky to live very close to school, so we can walk (would really recommend new people to find a place very very close, as it makes your life so much easier)

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

There's a 25-m pool, Astro field, three tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, a gym, sports hall and a Grand Hall. Since the school is big, it is not easy to find a place for every one activity, but there is lots to do, from building Lego, arts, debating clubs to all kinds of sports. CCA's are open for all children, including Year 1 & 2

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

Our children didn't speak a word of English when we got here. They were placed in EAL-classes: small classes with only 9 kids, with lovely, patient, caring teachers to get them through that first period. They started school in February and were transferred to mainstream classes at the start of the new school year. One of them still had some extra English lessons, the other just went on with learning a second foreign language! Both of them have always felt at home at the school, found new friends very soon!

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

There's a PTF, I believe school organizes a coffee morning for parents every month and there are special lectures for parents, on third culture kids for instance. Lots of ways to get to know other parents!

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

Follow your heart.
