An Expat Talks about Moving to Morristown, New Jersey

Submitted by AAsh

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Morristown

Name three things that you wish you had brought and three you wish you had left at home.

Should have brought Typhoo Decaf Tea, favourite sweets and M & S unmentionables. Could have left behind electrical appliances, most books and Christmas decorations except for one or two with special meaning.

Check on commuting times via train and car if need to travel to NYC. Ask about transience of population. Discover the variety of family/children's activities available in your town of choice. Towns have recreation web sites. See free magazines for details

What type of housing do you live in? Is this typical for most expats in your area?

Large detached. Had to get used to the unfenced gardens. Youngest child was confined to the deck!

How did you choose your neighborhood and find your home or apartment?

Found the area by talking with friends and using realtor as well as length of commute. Also, by calibre of schools recommended by School Choice.

Are your housing costs higher or lower than they were in your home country? What is the average cost of housing there?

Slightly less than UK. A nice house with 4 bed 2 1/2 bath and double garage in a child friendly neighbourhood would run approx. $700,000.
