Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Bahamas.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Bahamas.
Requirements for a Foreigner to Legally Drive in the Bahamas
Foreigners visiting the Bahamas can legally drive using their valid home country driver's license for up to three months. However, if the foreigner plans to reside in the Bahamas for a longer period, they must obtain a Bahamian driver's license. The requirements do not vary by city, state, or region.
Process for Obtaining a Bahamian Driver's License
The process for a foreigner to obtain a Bahamian driver's license is as follows:
Valid residency Status: Ensure you have valid residency status in the Bahamas, such as a work permit or residency permit.
Gather Required Documents: Prepare the following documents:
- Valid home country driver's license
- Passport with valid residency stamp or permit
- Completed Bahamas driver's license application form (available at the Road Traffic Department)
- Two passport-sized photographs
- Medical certificate (issued by a Bahamian doctor)
Visit the Road Traffic Department: Go to the Road Traffic Department in Nassau or any of its branches in the Family Islands. Submit the required documents and pay the application fee.
Take the Written Test: If your home country driver's license is not in English, you may be required to take a written test based on the Bahamas Highway Code.
Driving Test: Depending on the discretion of the Road Traffic Department, you may be required to take a practical driving test.
Receive Your License: Once you have successfully completed the required tests, you will receive your Bahamian driver's license.
It is recommended to check with the Road Traffic Department for the most up-to-date information and specific requirements, as processes and fees may change.
