Getting a Driver's License in Denmark

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Denmark.

In Denmark, the requirements for a foreigner to legally drive depend on their country of origin and the duration of their stay. There are no regional differences as rules are uniform across the country.

Short-term Stays (Up to 90 Days)

For short-term stays, visitors can use their valid foreign driver's license. However, if the license is not issued in English, German, or French, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is also required.

Long-term Stays (Over 90 Days)

For stays exceeding 90 days, foreigners must obtain a Danish driver's license. The process is as follows:

• Register with the Danish Civil Registration System to obtain a CPR number (personal identification number).

• Have a medical examination performed by a doctor in Denmark. The doctor must fill out and sign a health certificate.

• Submit an application for a Danish driver's license to the local Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice). Include the following documents:

  • Valid passport or ID card
  • CPR number
  • Valid foreign driver's license
  • Medical certificate
  • Passport photo
  • Proof of address

• Depending on the country of origin, individuals may need to take a theoretical and/or practical driving test. This applies to countries outside the EU/EEA and certain EU countries where driver's license standards do not meet Danish requirements.

• Complete a first aid course (mandatory for all applicants).

• Pay the applicable fees for issuing the Danish driver's license.

After completing these steps and passing any required tests, a Danish driver's license will be issued. The license is valid for 15 years for individuals under the age of 70.
