Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Chongqing.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Chongqing, can be quite challenging for foreigners due to the heavy traffic and different driving habits. The driving culture in China is quite different from Western countries. Drivers often do not follow traffic rules strictly, and traffic can be chaotic, especially during peak hours. Therefore, it's essential to be patient and alert while driving.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Chongqing due to the city's narrow and hilly streets. Smaller cars are easier to maneuver and park. However, if you plan to travel outside the city frequently, an SUV might be a better choice for comfort and safety.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Chongqing can be difficult, especially in downtown areas. Most parking spaces are small, and it can be challenging to park larger vehicles. Parking fees vary depending on the location, but they are generally affordable compared to Western countries.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners cannot drive in China with an international driving permit (IDP) or foreign driving license. You must obtain a Chinese driving license to drive legally in China. However, if you have a valid foreign driving license, you can apply for a temporary Chinese driving license, which is valid for up to three months.

5. Obtaining a Chinese Driving License

To get a Chinese driving license, you need to pass a written test in English or Chinese. The test includes questions about traffic rules and road signs. You can take the test at the local traffic police department. Before taking the test, you need to provide a valid passport, residence permit, health certificate, and your foreign driving license. It's recommended to study the Chinese driving manual thoroughly before taking the test.

6. Consider Public Transportation

Given the challenges of driving in Chongqing, many expats prefer to use public transportation or hire a driver. Chongqing has an extensive public transportation system, including buses, taxis, and a metro system. Hiring a driver can also be a cost-effective option if you need to travel frequently.
