1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Sosua, Dominican Republic, can be a unique experience. The traffic rules are not always strictly adhered to, and the driving style can be aggressive. It’s important to be alert and cautious at all times. Expect the unexpected, such as motorcycles and pedestrians appearing out of nowhere.

2. Car Recommendation

It’s recommended to have a car that’s suitable for both city and rural driving. A compact SUV or a mid-size car would be ideal. These cars are suitable for the sometimes rough road conditions, especially in the countryside.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Sosua can be challenging, especially during peak hours and in busy areas. However, parking is generally not expensive. It’s advisable to always park in a secured area to avoid any potential issues.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in the Dominican Republic with an international driver’s license for up to 90 days. After this period, you will need to obtain a local driver’s license.

5. Obtaining a Local Driver’s License

To get a local driver’s license, you will need to visit the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (DIGESETT). You will need to provide your passport, a medical certificate, and your current driver’s license. You will also need to pass a written and practical driving test.

6. Be Aware of Motorcycles

Motorcycles are a common mode of transportation in Sosua and they often do not follow the same rules as cars. Be extra cautious when you see a motorcycle nearby as they can often appear out of nowhere and may not signal their intentions.

7. Be Prepared for Unpredictable Road Conditions

Road conditions in Sosua can be unpredictable with potholes and speed bumps being common. It’s advisable to drive slowly and carefully, especially in areas you’re not familiar with.

8. Always Carry Your Documents

Always carry your driver’s license, registration, and insurance documents when driving. Police checks are common and you will be asked to show these documents.
