1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Mombasa, like many other parts of Kenya, can be a challenging experience for newcomers. The traffic can be heavy, especially during peak hours, and the driving style of locals may seem aggressive and chaotic. It’s important to be patient, alert, and defensive while driving. Always expect the unexpected.

2. Type of Car to Use

Given the state of some roads in Mombasa, especially during the rainy season, a 4×4 vehicle is recommended. This will handle the rough terrains better. However, for city driving, a smaller, fuel-efficient car would be more suitable and economical.

3. Parking in Mombasa

Finding parking in Mombasa can be a challenge, especially in the city center. However, there are several paid parking lots available. The cost of parking is relatively affordable, but it’s advisable to always have some cash on hand for this.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Kenya with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to one year. After this period, you will need to obtain a Kenyan driving license. It’s important to always have your IDP and your home country’s driving license with you when driving.

5. Obtaining a Kenyan Driving License

To get a Kenyan driving license, you will need to go through a driving school and pass both a theory and practical test. The process involves obtaining a provisional license, taking driving lessons, and then sitting for the tests. Once you pass, you can apply for a full driving license. It’s advisable to use a reputable driving school to ensure you receive proper training and guidance.

6. Road Safety

Always remember to buckle up and ensure all your passengers do the same. Avoid using your phone while driving and always observe the speed limits. Be especially cautious when driving at night as visibility can be poor and there may be pedestrians on the road.

7. Dealing with Traffic Police

It’s not uncommon to encounter traffic police while driving in Mombasa. Always cooperate with them and follow their instructions. If you’re stopped, you may be asked to produce your driving license and other vehicle documents. It’s illegal to bribe a police officer in Kenya, so never attempt to do this.
