Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Kuantan.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Kuantan, like many parts of Malaysia, can be a unique experience. The traffic can be heavy during peak hours and drivers tend to be aggressive. It’s important to be patient and alert at all times. The road conditions are generally good, but be aware of motorcyclists who often weave in and out of traffic.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Kuantan due to the heavy traffic and narrow roads. They are easier to maneuver and park. However, if you plan to travel outside the city frequently, a larger car or SUV might be more comfortable.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Kuantan can be challenging, especially in the city center during peak hours. However, most shopping malls and office buildings have ample parking spaces. Parking fees are generally affordable, but it’s always good to have some change handy for parking meters.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Malaysia with an international driving permit (IDP) for up to 90 days. After that, you will need to obtain a Malaysian driving license. It’s important to carry your IDP and passport with you at all times when driving.

5. Obtaining a Malaysian Driving License

As a foreigner, you can convert your foreign driving license to a Malaysian one if your country has a bilateral agreement with Malaysia. You will need to submit the necessary documents, including your original driving license, passport, and visa, to the Road Transport Department. If your country does not have an agreement with Malaysia, you will need to take a driving test in Malaysia.

6. Follow the Road Rules

Malaysia follows the left-hand driving system. Always wear your seatbelt and avoid using your mobile phone while driving. Speed limits vary depending on the area, so always pay attention to road signs. Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited and heavily penalized.

7. Be Prepared for Rainy Weather

Kuantan experiences a tropical rainforest climate, which means it can rain heavily at any time of the year. Always keep an umbrella in your car and drive carefully during rainy weather as roads can become slippery.
