Summary: As you plan your move to Pakistan, a key decision awaits: selecting the right health insurance. Should you go with local or expat coverage? This article explores the options and includes experiences shared by expats in Pakistan, offering a glimpse into what might work best for you.

Pakistan's system is a mix of public and private sectors, with health insurance playing a significant role. The health insurance landscape in Pakistan is evolving, with various options available for both locals and expats.

Health Insurance Companies in Pakistan

Some of the most popular health insurers in Pakistan include State Life Insurance Corporation, Jubilee Life Insurance, and EFU Life Assurance. State Life Insurance Corporation is a state-owned enterprise providing a range of insurance products, including health insurance. Jubilee Life Insurance and EFU Life Assurance are prominent private players offering comprehensive health insurance plans. Expats are generally eligible to purchase health insurance from these companies. However, it's crucial to check the latest policies and regulations, as they can change over time.

Expat Health Insurance in Pakistan

Some expats living in Pakistan opt for specialized expat health insurance. This is often because expat health insurance plans typically provide more comprehensive coverage, including benefits such as medical evacuation, repatriation, and coverage for pre-existing conditions. Additionally, these plans often offer global coverage, allowing expats to maintain their insurance even as they move between countries.

Local Health Insurance vs. Expat Health Insurance

The choice between local health insurance and specialized expat health insurance depends on individual needs and circumstances. Expats and digital nomads may prefer local insurance for its potentially lower cost and direct access to local healthcare providers. However, others might opt for expat health insurance due to its international coverage, more extensive benefits, and ease of use when between different countries.

Considerations When Choosing Health Insurance Overseas

When deciding on health insurance while living overseas, there are several factors to consider. These include whether the insurer pays the hospital directly or if you need to pay out-of-pocket and then seek reimbursement. Other considerations include the extent of coverage, deductibles, co-pays, and whether the policy covers pre-existing conditions. Additionally, it's essential to evaluate the network of healthcare providers and the process for accessing care.

Expats talk about Health Insurance in Pakistan

"Having traveled fairly well and lived in the US for one years as a student at Harvard and later 2 years working there, I would not compare the Pakistan health facilities with the developed countries but Pakistan trained doctors are welcomed all over the developed economies in droves. The quality of Pakistan's health facilities is very reliable if you've money to spend. Private hospitals and facilities abound and provide real good quality of services which is very low priced in comparison to international prices for comparable services and procedures. The quality of public-funded universal coverage is bad due to lack of resources and management efficiency nonetheless," commented one member living in Pakistan.
