Summary: Advice for people moving to Cannes or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Cannes or thinking about moving there.

Living as an expat or digital nomad in Cannes, can be an exciting and enriching experience. This glamorous city, known for its annual film festival, offers a unique blend of culture, cuisine, and coastal beauty. However, to make the most of your time in Cannes, it's important to understand the local lifestyle and customs. Here are seven key tips to help you navigate life in this beautiful French Riviera city.

1. Learn the Language

While many people in Cannes speak English, especially in the tourism industry, learning French will greatly enhance your experience. Not only will it make daily tasks easier, but it will also help you connect with locals and understand the culture better. Consider taking a language course or using language learning apps to improve your French skills.

2. Explore the Neighborhoods

Cannes is more than just the glitz and glamour of the Croisette. The city is divided into several neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm. Le Suquet, the old town, offers narrow winding streets, stunning views, and historical sites like the Musée de la Castre. La Bocca is a more residential area with a local feel, while Californie-Pézou is known for its luxury villines and panoramic sea views. Spend time exploring these neighborhoods to truly understand the city's diverse character.

3. Embrace the Local Cuisine

French cuisine is world-renowned, and Cannes offers plenty of opportunities to indulge. From fresh seafood at Astoux et Brun to traditional Provençal dishes at Le Maschou, there's something for every palate. Don't forget to try local specialties like socca, a chickpea flour pancake, and pissaladière, a type of onion tart. Also, visiting local markets like Marché Forville is a great way to discover local produce and regional delicacies.

4. Understand the Cost of Living

Living in Cannes can be expensive, especially in areas close to the city center or the beach. Rent, dining out, and entertainment costs can be high. However, there are ways to manage your budget. Shopping at local markets, cooking at home, and using public transportation can help you save money. It's also worth noting that healthcare in France is excellent and relatively affordable compared to many other countries.

5. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to feel at home in Cannes is to get involved in the community. This could mean joining a local club, participating in community events, or volunteering. Research groups and organizations that align with your interests and get involved. This will not only help you make friends and connections but also deepen your understanding of the local culture and way of life.

6. Enjoy the Outdoors

Cannes offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The city's beautiful beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The nearby Lérins Islands are great for hiking and exploring. Cannes also has several parks, like Parc de la Roseraie and Jardin de la Villa Rothschild, where you can relax and enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Make sure to take advantage of these natural assets.

7. Respect the Local Customs

French people are generally formal and polite, and it's important to respect these customs. Always greet people with a polite "Bonjour" or "Bonsoir" and say "Merci" when someone helps you. It's also customary to kiss on both cheeks when meeting friends. Remember that dining is a leisurely affair in France, so don't rush your meals. Understanding and respecting these customs will help you fit in and feel more at home in Cannes.

Living in Cannes as an expat or digital nomad can be a wonderful experience. By learning the language, understanding the local customs, and getting involved in the community, you can make the most of your time in this beautiful city. Bon voyage!
