My wife, Gulia, and I just came back from a magical 10 day vacation, with friends, in Antigua and Panajachel, Guatemala. We fell in love and are planning our escape from the USA in the next 1-2 years. Our goal is to establish a NFP foundation to provide sanctuary for homeless dogs in the Lago Atitlan area.

How was the move with your dog.? We also traveled with a 64 lb Labradoodle. We had her trained as a service dog, and traveling was great. If you need a good vet in Antigua area, let me know... We are transitioning to Antigua from las Vegas... and bought a home during Covid

I can't speak from experience here in regards to Guatemala health care aside from dentistry, where they have a thriving dental industry some of which caters to tourists. But I have seen in Guatemala city that there are a range of private services operating, and the most impressive to me has been BlueMedical. They have a medical center at the very trendy little area in zona 4 called the Quo.
This area is also home to about 10 major towers, mixed residencial and commercial, La Torre (food store) and Smart Fit gym are there and several buildings all face each other with a lovely courtyard in the middle, many restaurants and an open air restaurant. I think the area is worth a visit if spending some time in Guate.
BlueMedical operates ambulances and I believe they have both medical clinics and hospitals here. I'm not sure of the costs, they might be relatively expensive... but all of their facilities and ambulances in particular seem very modern. I see other ambulances that sometimes look like they from a different era, and then BlueMedical with this fleet of brand new vehicles.
Their site is https://mibluemedical.com/blue-medical-para-tu-familia/

Hello there! I'm an aviation attorney, helicopter pilot & circus/aerial artist looking to relocate from SoCal to Antigua (or possibly Lake Atitlan). I have a nearly one year old daughter. My partner is an avid rock climber, hiker, and general outdoorsman. Now that I'm working remotely full time (thanks, COVID!), the world is my oyster and I've convinced my partner that we should look into living in Guatemala. He's agreed to 'try it out' for 6 months, but I'm hoping that he will fall in love with the country as much as I have. I've spent a bit of time in Guatemala, mostly at Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and around Tikal. I'm really looking for genuine community - to show my daughter that there is more to life than what you find here in the US. In order to convince my partner that Guatemala is the place for us, I'm really looking for 4 things - 1) affordable, quality childcare for our daughter; 2) lots of challenging outdoor activities (rock climbing, hiking); 3) an avid aviation and circus communities (which I know exist) for my own happiness & peace of mind; and 4) quality, reliable healthcare.

Too many issues in the US. I would like to find out more about how to handle retirement payments that we receive monthly, health services, best areas to live, affordability, etc. He has a family home in the good part of Zona 18.

Hi, my girlfriend lives in Guatemala, and I visited there one week - in Guat City and Antigua. I'm a retired Aerospace Engineer in involved in metaphysics/UFOs/guitar and singing, as my main retirement activities. I wasn't excited about the idea of living in Guatemala when I returned to the US, so I'm here to see what ExPats have to share. Thanks!

Hello,
I am Scott, and live in the Denver, CO metro area with my dog Jax. I am in my mid-60s, a widower with all adult children. I plan to retire from the university within the next 10 months and relocate south. I love Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Colombia, and it seems that Guatemala would be the best option at this time.
I am in the early stages of considering a move to Antigua. Depending upon costs, I may consider shipping a container with household goods and belongings, and I think this will cost $7k-$10K from Denver to Guatemala City. Since I will not be maintaining a residence in the U.S., it would be nice to have some of my personal items. I plan to drive from Colorado with my dog.

I have taught high school science for 32 years and am finally ready for "me time". I like to travel but have not to date done as much as I would have liked. I am interested in doing extended stay in different countries especially Spanish speaking as I would like to become a fluent speaker. I am ESL/TEFL certified and would like to exchange languages with one or several. My daughters and grown grandchildren also travel extensively and I would be excited to share a more remote corner of the world with them. Guatemala and Peru are high on my list but someday I would also like to do an extended visit to Italy and Portugal.

Hi. I'm lurking about, looking for information on how to begin learning my way around Mexico and Guatemala, become fluent in Spanish, and eventually be able to drive around Guatemala and look for my spot to retire. I guess I just need to get there and get involved in learning the language and navigation, which is a big "jumping off" point for me. I have some Spanish skills, and I seem to thrive in the equatorial regions. I'm looking for a grocery store with no lines in the parking lot, and a home with no furnace, where i can drive a little pickup truck to go swimming. For 'trade in kind' help, I'm a long practiced and quite skilled third world mechanic, with home construction & building skills and experience in both third and first world. The body is getting worn tho, and I'm about through with winters and heating bills. So I say, May you have the strength to abandon the habits that no longer serve you.

Hey folks, We're new to this forum so I'd like to introduce myself and my wife. We're a husband & wife photo & video team. While I've worked as a photographer for most of my life, Trish spent many years as a designer and an art director prior to her work as a photographer and videographer. We work on commercial, editorial, travel and documentary assignments as well as NGO/NPO projects. I've been very blessed over the years to have worked with some really great people in some incredible locations around the world. I'm an award winning editorial, travel and documentary photographer based in Texas. I specialize in still photography and video for editorial/travel and documentary clients as well as non profit organizations. I've traveled the globe for more than 25 years shooting assignments for clients that include National Geographic Magazine, NY Times, Nat Geo Adventure, ESPN, Smithsonian, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Better Homes & Gardens, Boys Life, Wired, Backpacker, the Fort Worth Star Telegram Newspaper to corporate and advertising clients Leo Burnett, BBDO, Fleishman Hillard, The Richards Group, DDB Needham, Dell Computer, Compaq, Motorola, Wal Mart, NCR, Panasonic, Mayan Families and many, many others. My assignments have taken me to 49 U.S. states and throughout Canada, Mexico, Central & South America, Thailand, Spain, Germany, France, the UK, Japan and others. I've taught photography workshops in Hawaii, Maine, Texas and Guatemala. Trish has been a creative professional in advertising since 1990 and has owned her own Advertising and Marketing agency since 2000. She's now a writer, photographer, videographer and content creator. And she's an FAA licensed drone operator as well. Some of her clients include, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Cameron-Brooks, The Nursing Team, Pre-K 4 SA, West End Pizza Company, Fredericksburg Convention & Visitors Bureau, St. Mary's Catholic School and many others.
My first trip to Guatemala was on a photo assignment back in 1990, during the civil war, and there have been many trips and assignments since. Trish and I adopted a newborn from Guatemala back in 2002 and have taken both of our boys to Guatemala several times for vacation and on mission trips since. The boys are now 19 & 20, one's a senior in high school and one's in college so we now find ourselves on the edge of being empty nesters. I'm ready to "semi" retire from a long photography career and my wife is looking to retire in the next year from the advertising agency she owns. We're 61 (me) and 55 (her) and are both working photographers and film makers. Where to retire to has become a constant question in our house. For some time Panama has been on the list along with Mexico & Costa Rica but the one place that keeps rising to the top is Antigua Guatemala. Antigua holds a very special place in our hearts so it only makes sense that it should top the list of prospective retirement locations. So, as well as I think I know Antigua and other areas of Guatemala I find that what we really need is to belong to a group of experienced expats that can help us navigate the do's and don'ts of moving to and living in the Antigua area. We've gained a tremendous amount of valuable info from our many trips to Guatemala but by not being there on a more permanent basis there's still much to learn. Thanks in advance for your patience, kindness and advice over the coming year. We look forward to following along with all the topics concerning expats living in Guatemala.

I'm looking to move to Guatemala in the next year or so. My significant other is from there and we met while they were here studying in the US.
I am familiar with the culture and customs, having been friends and dated a few central Anericans, including a Guatemalan before them.
This is very exciting for me, I love the culture and people. The food and the attitude and love for life that I have seen in all my Chapin friends ??
I work remotely and will continue to do so until I can give back to Guatemalans in a meaningful way that will also sustain myself.

I work with a charity called HUGS Help Us Go to School. Our focus is on keeping children in school who do not have the resources to stay in school. We believe good and consistent early education is the first step to breaking the cycle of poverty. Our focus at this point are the children of Panajachel.

SWM, divorced and retired. Planning a 2-4 week trip to Guatemala in the next couple of months. My purpose is to determine if the country of Guatemala is a country I would relocate to and spend at least 50% of my time living their. I would like to find a female companion seeking a long term relationship leading to marriage and one that would be open to traveling to the USA to live for 3-6 months a year.

I’ll be communicating for an older expat whom does not have the ease of computer usage as I do, and has asked me to aid in this. Hello, my name is Chauncey Jackson. I live in San Antonio, TX; am retired USAF; have 3 grown children and 2 grand-children; and a fiance there in Guatemala City. I may not be moving there on a permanent basis, but will be making semi-annual visits. I've never visited Central America, but am really looking forward to it. I'm told I might find some parallels there to Vietnam (climate wise), sans the hell-fire.

Hello, my name is Cristina. My husband Derek and I are planning to move to Guatemala, or another location either in Mexico or Central America to be closer to family. My family currently lives in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, so being closer to them as we look to retirement is ideal. At this point we are exploring and plan on traveling over the next few years to check the locations we are considering. I look forward to connecting with folks currently living in Antigua, Guatemala and eventually Panama (still exploring) and parts of Mexico (La Paz comes to mind).

there's a lot , maybe 1/2 acre size, next to mine that's ocean view (across the narrow dirt road, with NOTHING on the beach itself to obstruct a view) in sleepy little Esquintla dept. town of Tecojate.. just a guess the price should be no more than Q50,000. I was there less than a week ago.

Hello. My name is Roberto. Actually I am an expat born Guatemala who has lived in the US since I was 3. I will now be splitting my time between US and Guatemala. I am building a home 10 minutes from Antigua which I hope will be completed by August 2021.
I am a photographer and photography/photoshop instructor and will be able to carry on with my work for architectural firms during my months in Guatemala.

hola/hello. I'm Rodd, an old guy living in small town north FL, wanting to move to Guatemala.. I've been 6 times in last 10 years and have land picked out in tiny Pacific village. I need info on moving my household stuff there, especially if I drive a vehicle there thru Mexico. what problems am I likely to incur?

Hello everyone. I’m married to a Guatemalan citizen in the US. I know that’s not a recognized status in Guatemala, but I thought I’d get that out of the way. We have been together for over 30 years and I expect we’ve traveled there at least 30 times so far. We have always planned to move to Guatemala when my husband retires here in the US. That time will be August 2022.
As that time is fast approaching we are beginning to develop a budget for the move.
Fortunately, we already own a five bedroom home in a gated community in Guatemala City, so we are fairly confident that we have living cost at zero $ on that.
His family is well established and owns a hospital (american standards.). Also, several doctors and lawyers in the family to help with health and legal issues.
We are shipping our car there as it’s a huge price difference from buying a new car there.
We have attorneys to help with the many legal obstacles.
We have started budgeting and I have it in an Excel format.
If you have experience with the cost of living could I send it to someone who can tell me if it is realistic.
Also, I understand we need to open an account with an established bank to where we can transfer dollars from our US banks and withdraw Quetzals locally. Since my husband is a citizen I don’t think there should be a problem doing that. But, what do I need in order to be a co-owner on a Guatemala bank account.
As for time limits on being in the country we have an attorney locally we plan on using. He’s a family member so we trust him.
We feel like we have a good budget now but would like someone currently in Guatemala City to review it and suggest updates. Can anyone contact me by email so I can reply with a copy of the budget and get an opinion if it’s reasonable.
My email is: [email protected]
