Post New Topic

We have bought a house and in the adjacent road is a road bump. Cracks have developed and we are told they are due to lorries going over the bumps causing vibration which has caused the damage...in the UK you can claim restitution...how about in Bulgaria???

How old is the house ? If a road bump causes cracks, I would worry what happens if you have earthquake and Bulgaria is in a fault area. Last major quake in Bulgaria was in the Black sea just off the southern coast near to Greece in 2014. Every few years they have quakes there of Mag 5 to 7 which can cause significant damage.

We think the house was built in the late 1950s. Located north of Montana which seems to have been earthquake free. The reason we think the road bump is the culprit is due to the mega lorries that use this route. Some drivers hardly slow down and when they pass the window glass sometimes vibrates!

Actually, There was a earthquake in Sofia in 1858 of 6.6 Mag. which would shake your area and do damage. In 2012 there was another quake in Pernik which is just southeast of Sofia of mag 5.6. Both might do considerable damage in your area.
And there have been a few in Romania across the Danube from where you are that would shake your area. Some of these quakes have been felt as far away as Budapest in Hungary. Look it up and you will see. There are lists on Wikipedia. I am quite sure a road bump can cause some shaking as I once was at a house near a "speed Bump" on the street outside and it is not pleasant to feel the impact of the vehicle on the bump if no one slows down. I sure would not want to live there. However, I doubt you will get any payment for damage.

Thanks for the comments Joshuak, Earthquakes are an 'Act Of God' for want of a better expression, however Speed Bumps are not!
We realise that whilst you may get something in the UK if damage can be directly linked to a speed bump...in Bulgaria...
The best we could expect is for them to move it 100 yards to where there are no houses!!!

The Bulgarian Authorities like all others have been very quick to catch on on to how to charge and introduce Taxes (that are fines) for roads that in the area you are talking about as we are in Lom are disgracefully maintained and getting anything back they have made impossible...BG TOLL legalized pirates...

Is this "bump" a purpose made "speed Bump" or just a bad road ? Either way have you asked them to fix or move it away from houses ?

No not standard BG potholes, but a speed bump. Apparently some years ago a woman was run over and killed crossing the road and the bump was put there to slow the traffic...which it does. No, I have not approached the Authorities yet as I hoped to glean info from others who may have had the same issue first. We think the local Mayor may be the best place to start.

Don't be surprised if they tell you if you want it moved you have to pay for it. I have even seen that here in the US. When people ask for a speed bump and it then bothers them, the city or county has in some cases ask them to pay to move it. So it is the old story, be careful what you ask for. I know it was not you that asked, but someone did before you. maybe that is why they sold and moved ?
