Best city/town to stay for a year with family

Hi

I'm coming to study in Dublin for a year, and I'm bringing my wife & 2 kids (3 & 1 years) along. The course is in Dublin, but only once a month so we're not tied to being in Dublin (and cant afford the rent there anyway!)

Where would you suggest as a good place to stay with a young family within 2-3 hours commute of Dublin. Ideally somewhere on the coast, reasonable rent, preferably not in the city, but also with a large enough community that we can plug in to (moms & tots groups, running club, church etc).

Any input would be really appreciated! Thanks
