Australia study/permanent resident visa

Hi, I'm a Brit looking to migrate to Oz. I'm having difficulty getting the points to get a visa and am considering doing a years study then applying for permanent resident status. Has anyone else out there got in (getting in) to Oz this way? Any correspondence/advice/tips would be appreciated re. costs or migration agents or the bueracratic nightmare in general.
Thanks in advance. MB
