Mumbai - What, Where and Everything!

Hi,

My employer has recently offered me an expatriate position in Mumbai. I'm a young guy (mid 20's) who has already been on international assignment in central Europe, I enjoyed it so much so I'm considering this offer. Its not my fear of being overseas that has drawn me to start this thread but rather that I know relatively little about life in and what I should be asking for in my Mumbai, India package.

I earn close to £47,000 per/year and will be provided a budget of £800-£1000 per/month for accommodation.

Accommodation - What areas in Mumbai should I be looking at? Is this budget enough?
I'm very social, like a drink or to go out for dinner so a vibrant location is my preference. Are there expat specific areas? Will my budget enable me to get a nice place? ('nice place' I know is very broad, if anyone can help with specifics - number of bedrooms, number of bathes, area I should be looking at, apartment/house size, approximity to central city area - that'd be a great help)

Transport - All the expat blogs I've read so far have inserted a section on transportation. They've noted that catching public transport is virtually impossible during peak hours and not advised (if other means are available). Do most expatriates have drivers/cars? What is the cost of having a driver and/or car? - This is likely to be provided by my employer, but I'd like to know how viable this is and an approximate cost.

Lifestyle - I've been told it's preferable to be provided social/club (I enjoy playing golf) membership? .... Is this true? If so, which clubs? does this have to be organised through existing members?... If not, I know the growing middle class has created a growing consumer market but what else is there to do (sorry about naivety)

I'm sure I'll think of many more questions.... but for now if anyone can help with the above it'd be much appreciated!

Thanks
SMA
