TEFL necessary?

Hi, I currently live in the U.S. and am nearing retirement. My interest would be short term gigs teaching ESL overseas. Is a TEFL necessary? The reason I ask is that I am the author of 31 non fiction books and thousands of articles on a variety of topics. I have also taught writing at the college level. For someone with those credentials, would a TEFL still be necessary or a needless expenditure? Thanks for any and all feedback!
