greetings from FL. like here in the us, crime seems to be more of a problem in bigger cities so consider small to medium size places. I've been to Guate about 10 times now over 12 yrs and knock on wood haven't had anything bad happen to me. I'm moving to a small Pac. ocean village of 500-600 people safety is now something I think about. I'm 75.

I would suggest NOT renting for a year, but choose a few of the places already mentioned and rent for a few weeks or month. Places are so very different in so many ways, from facilities, to weather - Xela is the coldest place at over 2,000 meters, Rio Dulce is very hot along with other coastal areas. And the mountains Antigua, Guatemala City and Lake Atitlan are all temperate "Land of the Eternal Spring". Lake Atitlan, even more choice as every village is different!
Explore, spend time in different place, talk to locals, talk to expats, before making any decision to live somewhere for a year!
There is something for everyone here, so you will find your spot too....like all of us already here!! Good Luck!
