Real Estate in Sri Lanka

By Betsy Burlingame

Last updated on May 12, 2023

Summary: An expat looking to buy a home in Sri Lanka should begin by researching the different areas of the country and deciding which area best suits their needs. They should then contact a local real estate agent to help them find a suitable property. Homes in Sri Lanka typically include amenities such as air conditioning, hot water, and a kitchen. Some homes may also include a swimming pool, garden, and other luxury features. Foreigners are allowed to purchase property in Sri Lanka, however, they must obtain approval from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka before doing so. Additionally, foreigners are not allowed to purchase land in Sri Lanka.

How do I find a place to live in Sri Lanka?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"One of the best ways to find a place to live in Sri Lanka is to use online resources such as real estate websites, classifieds, and social media groups. You can also contact local real estate agents who can help you find a suitable place to live. Additionally, you can ask friends and family who live in Sri Lanka for recommendations. Finally, you can also look for rental postings in local newspapers and magazines," said one expat in Sri Lanka.
