Summary: A newcomer to California should begin their search by researching the different neighborhoods and cities in the state. They should consider factors such as cost of living, job opportunities, and quality of schools. They should also look into the local housing market to get an idea of what types of homes are available and what prices they can expect to pay. When searching for a home to buy in California, it is important to consider the amenities that come with the property. Common amenities in California homes include air conditioning, central heating, a garage, a backyard, and a swimming pool. Many homes also come with updated appliances, such as a refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Some homes may also include additional features, such as a fireplace, a patio, or a security system.

What do I need to know when buying property in California?

When we asked expats what advice they would give a foreigner before buying a property in California, they said:

"1. California is a "buyer beware" state, which means buyers should conduct their own due diligence when purchasing property. 2. It is important to research the title history and the legality of any liens or judgments associated with the property. 3. Seek the advice of qualified and licensed real estate professionals, such as real estate agents and attorneys, when considering a purchase. 4. Make sure to obtain a good understanding of the local property taxes and school districts, as well as homeowner's or condo association fees. 5. Consider obtaining a home inspection before signing a purchase contract in order to identify any potential issues. 6. Be aware of California's disclosure laws, which require sellers to provide certain information about their property, such as known structural, electrical, and plumbing problems. 7. Understand any local zoning laws that may affect a potential purchase. 8. Make sure to get title insurance, which will protect the buyer in case there is a defect in the title that would prevent the buyer from taking full ownership of the property," remarked one foreigner who made the move to California.
