What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"Retirees in Protaras, advise others considering retiring abroad to thoroughly research the cost of living in their chosen destination, as it can vary greatly from their home country. They suggest learning the local language, even if it's just the basics, to help integrate into the community and make everyday tasks easier. They also recommend visiting the location multiple times at different times of the year before making a decision, to get a feel for the climate and lifestyle. It's also important to understand the healthcare system and ensure you have adequate coverage. They suggest renting a property before buying, to ensure the location suits your needs and lifestyle. Lastly, they advise making an effort to meet new people and get involved in local activities, to help build a social network and avoid feeling isolated," explained a retiree in Protaras.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Protaras?

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Protaras is the language barrier, as the official languages are Greek and Turkish, which may be difficult for expats to learn. The cost of living can also be high, especially in tourist areas like Protaras, which can strain a retiree's budget. The healthcare system, while generally good, can be confusing for foreigners to navigate, and private health insurance is recommended. The hot summer climate may also be a challenge for some, particularly those with health conditions that are exacerbated by heat. Additionally, while Cyprus is generally safe, there is a territorial dispute in the north of the island, which can occasionally lead to tensions. Lastly, retirees may also face challenges in terms of social isolation, especially if they struggle to integrate into the local community or if their family and friends are far away," said a retiree who moved to Protaras, Cyprus.
