What is it like to retire in Cotacachi?

"We live close to Cotacachi, which does have an ex-pat population but is also the most charming and prettiest of Ecuadorian cities I have seen, which is most of them. We live a few klicks outside of Cotacachi, in farm country. We have horses below, cows and corn above; and all around quiet, peace and friendly neighbors. What's not to like?," said a retiree who moved to Cotacachi, Ecuador.

"Life for a retiree in Cotacachi can be quite peaceful and fulfilling. The town is known for its tranquil environment, beautiful landscapes, and a slower pace of life that many retirees find appealing. The cost of living is also significantly lower than in many Western countries, making it an attractive destination for those looking to stretch their retirement savings. There is indeed an active expat community in Cotacachi. Many retirees from the United States, Canada, and Europe have chosen to settle here, drawn by the pleasant climate, affordable healthcare, and the welcoming nature of the local people. This community often organizes social events, providing opportunities for newcomers to make friends and integrate into the local culture. Cotacachi is rich in cultural attractions. It is famous for its leather goods, and the town is filled with shops selling handmade shoes, bags, and jackets. The local markets are a feast for the senses, offering a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and local delicacies. The town is also home to the annual Inti Raymi festival, a traditional indigenous celebration that attracts visitors from all over the world. In terms of recreation, Cotacachi offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The nearby Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve is a popular spot for hiking and bird watching. The town is also close to the beautiful Cuicocha Lake, a crater lake known for its stunning blue waters. Nightlife in Cotacachi is relatively quiet, reflecting the town's laid-back atmosphere. However, there are a number of restaurants and bars where one can enjoy a meal or a drink in the evening. For those seeking a more vibrant nightlife, the larger city of Ibarra is just a short drive away. In conclusion, life for a retiree in Cotacachi, Ecuador offers a blend of tranquility, cultural immersion, and outdoor adventure. The presence of an active expat community also provides a sense of familiarity and support for those making the move from abroad," said one retiree in Cotacachi.
