What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Exuma?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Exuma about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Exuma. The island has a public hospital and several private clinics, but for specialized maternity care, you may need to travel to Nassau or even to the United States. Ensure that your health insurance covers maternity care and childbirth in the Bahamas. If not, consider getting a local insurance policy that does. Prenatal care is essential, so make sure to schedule regular check-ups with a local obstetrician or midwife. Prepare for the possibility of needing to travel for the birth, especially if complications arise or if you prefer a hospital with more advanced facilities. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who is familiar with the local healthcare system and can advocate for your needs and preferences. If you plan to give birth on the island, make sure to pack a hospital bag well in advance, as some items you might need may not be readily available in Exuma. After the birth, register your baby's birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure they receive citizenship. Finally, connect with other expat parents in the Bahamas for support and advice. They can provide valuable insights into raising a child in a different cultural environment," commented one expat who made the move to Exuma, Bahamas.
