What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Istria?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Istria about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Croatian healthcare system. Croatia has a universal healthcare system, but private healthcare is also available. You may want to consider getting private health insurance to cover any additional costs. Secondly, you should find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language. This will make your prenatal visits and the birth itself much easier. Thirdly, you should start looking for a hospital or birthing center early in your pregnancy. Visit a few different places and choose the one where you feel most comfortable. Fourthly, you should learn about the local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. This can help you understand what to expect and how to navigate the system. Fifthly, you should consider taking Croatian language classes. Even though many Croatians speak English, it can be helpful to know some basic phrases in the local language. Sixthly, you should connect with other expats who have had babies in Croatia. They can provide valuable advice and support. Lastly, you should make sure your legal paperwork is in order. This includes your residency permit and the baby's birth certificate. It's also a good idea to check the requirements for registering the birth with your home country's embassy," wrote a member who made the move to Istria, Croatia.
