What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Rhodes?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Rhodes about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Public healthcare in Greece is generally of a good standard, but many expats choose to use private healthcare. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. This should include prenatal and postnatal care, as well as delivery and any potential complications. Find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during this time, so it's important to have a healthcare provider you can communicate with effectively. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide additional support and guidance throughout the pregnancy and birth process. Start looking into hospitals or birthing centers early on in your pregnancy. Visit a few to get a feel for where you would be most comfortable giving birth. Understand the local customs and practices around childbirth. In Greece, it's common for the mother to stay in the hospital for a few days after giving birth. Prepare all the necessary paperwork in advance. This includes your health insurance documents, identification, and any medical records or test results. Learn about the parental leave policies in Greece. Both parents are entitled to leave, but the specifics can vary depending on your employment situation. Finally, connect with other expat parents in Rhodes. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend local resources such as pediatricians, childcare services, and parenting groups," explained one expat living in Rhodes, Greece.
