What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Kefalonia?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Kefalonia about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has both public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for public healthcare if you are working and paying into the social security system. Secondly, you should find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language. This will make your prenatal appointments and the birth itself much easier. Thirdly, you should consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can help you navigate the Greek healthcare system and advocate for your wishes during the birth. Fourthly, you should research the local customs and traditions around childbirth. In Greece, it's common for the mother and baby to stay in the hospital for a few days after the birth, and visitors are often not allowed during this time. Fifthly, you should prepare for the paperwork. Registering a birth in Greece can be a bureaucratic process, and you'll need to ensure you have all the necessary documents. Lastly, you should connect with other expat parents in Kefalonia. They can offer advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time," said another expat in Kefalonia, Greece.
