What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Szentendre?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Szentendre about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Hungary. The country has a universal healthcare system, which means that all residents, including expats, have access to healthcare services. However, private healthcare is also available and may offer more comfort and convenience. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals, or search online for reviews. Make sure to check if the hospital or clinic is equipped with modern facilities and if the staff can communicate in English. Thirdly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support during pregnancy and childbirth. They can help you understand the local maternity system and advocate for your needs. Fourthly, learn about the maternity leave policies in Hungary. The country offers generous maternity leave benefits, but the rules may be different for expats. Check with your employer or the local labor office to understand your rights and obligations. Fifthly, prepare for the paperwork. Having a baby in a foreign country often involves a lot of bureaucracy. You will need to register the birth with the local authorities and with your home country's embassy or consulate. Make sure to keep all medical records and receipts, as they may be required for insurance or immigration purposes. Lastly, try to learn some Hungarian or find a local friend who can help you navigate the system. While many Hungarians speak English, especially in the healthcare sector, communication can still be a challenge. Having some knowledge of the local language or a local contact can make things easier," explained one expat living in Szentendre, Hungary.
