What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Waterford?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Waterford about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Irish healthcare system. Ireland has a high standard of healthcare and maternity services are provided free of charge under the Maternity and Infant Care Scheme. You should register with a local General Practitioner (GP) as soon as you know you're pregnant. They will provide you with antenatal care throughout your pregnancy and refer you to a maternity hospital if necessary. Waterford has a well-regarded maternity unit at University Hospital Waterford, but it's worth researching all your options and deciding what kind of birth experience you want. Consider hiring a doula or midwife for additional support during your pregnancy and birth. They can provide emotional and physical support, as well as help you navigate the healthcare system. Ensure you understand your rights and entitlements as a pregnant woman in Ireland. This includes maternity leave, which is generally 26 weeks, and additional unpaid leave, which can be taken immediately after maternity leave. If you're not an EU citizen, check your visa status and make sure your baby will have the right to Irish citizenship. Finally, try to connect with other expat parents in Waterford. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend local resources such as baby groups or childcare services," remarked another expat who made the move to Waterford, Ireland.
