What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Rotorua?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Rotorua about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in New Zealand. The country has a high standard of healthcare and maternity services are free for residents and certain permit holders. However, if you are not a resident, you may need to pay for these services, so it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance. Secondly, consider hiring a midwife as they are the primary maternity carers in New Zealand. They provide free maternity care for residents and some visa holders. You can choose your own midwife and they will be your main point of contact throughout your pregnancy, birth, and for up to six weeks after your baby is born. Thirdly, it's important to understand the maternity leave policies in New Zealand. If you are eligible, you can get up to 26 weeks of paid parental leave. Make sure to check your eligibility and apply in advance. Next, consider where you want to give birth. Rotorua Hospital has a maternity unit, and there are also options for home births. Discuss these options with your midwife. Also, it's a good idea to join local parenting groups or expat communities in Rotorua. They can provide support, advice, and friendship during this exciting time. Lastly, remember to enjoy this special time and take advantage of the beautiful natural surroundings in Rotorua. The city is known for its geothermal activity, Maori culture, and outdoor activities, making it a great place to start a family," wrote a member who made the move to Rotorua, New Zealand.
