What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Whitianga?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Whitianga about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in New Zealand. The country has a high standard of healthcare and maternity services are free for residents and certain permit holders. As an expat, you should check your eligibility for these services or ensure you have adequate health insurance coverage. Secondly, consider hiring a midwife as they are the primary maternity caregivers in New Zealand. They provide free services to residents and some visa holders, from pregnancy tests to six weeks post-birth care. Thirdly, it's important to understand the cultural norms and practices around childbirth in New Zealand. Kiwis generally have a relaxed and natural approach to childbirth, with a focus on the health and wellbeing of the mother and baby. Fourthly, you should explore the local resources available to you in Whitianga. This could include prenatal classes, support groups for new parents, and baby supplies stores. Fifthly, make sure to plan for parental leave. New Zealand has a generous parental leave system, but as an expat, your eligibility may depend on your visa status and employment contract. Lastly, remember to take time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Whitianga. The relaxed lifestyle and natural beauty of the area can provide a wonderful environment for raising a child," explained one expat living in Whitianga, New Zealand.
