What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Ayutthaya?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Ayutthaya if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"When visiting Ayutthaya, it is important to dress modestly, especially when visiting temples, by covering your shoulders and knees. Avoid touching people's heads, as it is considered disrespectful. Do not point your feet at people or religious objects, as feet are considered the lowest and dirtiest part of the body. Show respect to monks by giving them space and not touching them, especially if you are a woman. Do not disrespect the Thai royal family, as it is illegal and can lead to severe consequences. Be mindful of public displays of affection, as they are generally frowned upon in Thai culture. Lastly, try to remain calm and composed in all situations, as losing your temper is considered impolite and a sign of weakness," said a member in Ayutthaya, Thailand.
