What do I need to know about living in Ayutthaya?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ayutthaya, they said:

"Expats considering retirement in Ayutthaya should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, it's important to understand the cost of living, which is generally lower than in Western countries, but can vary depending on lifestyle. Healthcare in Thailand is of a high standard, particularly in larger cities, but it's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. The climate in Ayutthaya is tropical, with high temperatures and humidity year-round, and a rainy season from May to October. Expats should be prepared for this, and may need time to acclimate. Thailand's culture is deeply rooted in Buddhism, and respect for the religion is expected. This includes dressing modestly, particularly when visiting temples. The official language is Thai, and while English is spoken in tourist areas and by some locals, learning some basic Thai phrases can be beneficial. Thailand has a retirement visa, known as a Non-Immigrant O-A visa, available for foreigners aged 50 and over. This visa requires proof of financial stability, either through a monthly income or a deposit in a Thai bank account. Thai cuisine is world-renowned, but can be spicy. Expats should also be aware that Western food can be more expensive. Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a wealth of historical and cultural attractions. However, it's less bustling than cities like Bangkok, which may appeal to some retirees but not others. Finally, it's important to note that Thailand has strict laws on certain matters, such as lese majeste (criticism of the monarchy), and drug offenses, which can carry severe penalties," explained one expat living in Ayutthaya, Thailand.
