What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Aarhus?
We asked people in Aarhus if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...
"It is important to be aware of cultural norms when visiting Aarhus. It is considered rude to be late for social engagements, so it is important to arrive on time. It is also important to be aware of the Danish concept of 'hygge', which is a feeling of comfort and contentment. It is important to be respectful of personal space and to avoid loud or boisterous behavior in public. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the Danish concept of 'jantelov', which is a set of social norms that emphasize humility and discourage individualism. Finally, it is important to be aware of the Danish language and to avoid speaking English unless it is necessary," remarked another expat who made the move to Aarhus, Denmark.
"Yes. I kept telling my mother-in-law for probably 4 years that I was going to the "støvsuger" (vacuum cleaner) to watch television instead of "stuen" (living room)! Of course they knew what I meant (they don't speak English) but were too polite to ever correct me!!!," explained one expat living in Aarhus, Denmark.
