What are healthcare services like in Antigua?
We asked retirees if they have access to good medical care in Antigua. They wrote...
"Healthcare services in Antigua are a mix of public and private providers. The public healthcare system, run by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, offers free services to all residents, but is often underfunded and understaffed. This can lead to long wait times and a lack of specialized care. On the other hand, private healthcare in Antigua is of a higher standard, with well-equipped clinics and hospitals. Many doctors and nurses in the private sector are bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English, and some have received training abroad. However, private healthcare can be expensive, and not all residents can afford it. Some expatriates and wealthier Guatemalans opt for private health insurance to cover these costs. Pharmacies are widely available in Antigua, and many medications can be purchased without a prescription. However, more specialized drugs may not be readily available. In terms of emergency services, Antigua has a Red Cross station, and there are several private ambulance services. However, response times can be slow, especially in more rural areas. Overall, while basic healthcare services are available in Antigua, more serious or specialized conditions may require travel to a larger city or even out of the country," remarked another expat who made the move to Antigua, Guatemala.
