What do I need to know before moving to Penang?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Penang, they said...

"Penang is a vibrant and diverse city with a rich cultural heritage. Expats should be aware that the local language is Malay, although English is widely spoken. It is important to research the cost of living in Penang before moving, as it can be quite expensive. Expats should also be aware of the tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from hot and humid to cooler and drier. Additionally, Penang is a very safe city, with low crime rates and a strong police presence. Finally, expats should be aware of the local customs and etiquette, as Penang is a predominantly Muslim city," explained one expat living in Penang, Malaysia.

"Try to find a place in a touristy area. It's safer that way. Also consider proximity to supermarket, food stalls, restaurants and shopping. Forget about taking the bus. Taxis are very convenient," said another expat in Penang, Malaysia.
